Spring 2009- Final Cancellation List 2010

Letter from the University Librarian

Dear Colleagues in the University Community:

I write to inform you about the conclusion of preparations for the 2010 subscriptions cancellation project.   As I wrote to you in the spring, the current project partially represents the Libraries’ response to Colgate’s economic situation in the context of the 2009/2010 budget year and beyond.  These cancellations will occur with the first issue published in 2010.

Titles were chosen based on current and past use and this first round of cancellation focuses on titles with a cost per use greater than $300, titles which have seen little or no use in the past three years, or titles freely available through open access. Our goal was to apply these criteria equitably across all subjects while exercising the necessary flexibility to accommodate individual faculty member’s desire to retain certain subscriptions due to curricular support.

I acknowledge that many of these titles will be dearly missed and, as partial compensation, we are investing considerable staff resources and funds to strengthen interlibrary loan operations within the Libraries. We are in the midst of implementing the RapidILL service which has a goal of a 24-hour turnaround time. We are also actively investigating new methods to quickly acquire journal articles when color is an issue and we are looking into purchasing article tokens in bulk from some larger publishers in lieu of subscriptions.
