Connect NY is a unified catalog of participating academic libraries in New York State and the collections of the Center for Research Libraries designed to allow authorized users of participating libraries to borrow materials from other ConnectNY libraries if the books are not owned by their home library or if their library’s copy is already checked-out. Connect to FAQ’s for ConnectNY. Connect NY must be the first choice of patrons looking for items not available at Colgate Libraries.
Connect NY materials circulate for 3 weeks with an additional 3 weeks renewal. All Connect NY status of an item can be viewed on your My Library Account.
Interlibrary Loan
Traditional Interlibrary Loan is a service whereby a user of one library can borrow books or receive photocopies of documents that are owned by another library. The user makes a request to the Colgate ILL Borrowing Services Department which, acting as an intermediary, identifies owners of the desired item, places the request, receives the item, makes it available to the user, and arranges for its return. Although books and journal articles are the most frequently requested items, some libraries will lend audio recordings, video recordings, maps, sheet music, and microforms.
Colgate patrons can start a new ILL request by clicking on the My Inter-Library Loan link on the Library homepage, located under Library Services. World Cat and other First Search databases (like Geobase and the Alternative Press Index) have a link to our ILL. Once you’ve found a record for something you’d like to order, click on the link to My Inter-Library Loan. You’ll need to login to your ILL account and then the system will automatically populate the request form for you. The link to Colgate’s My Loan on the Article Linker pages acts in the same way.
Interlibrary Loan materials circulate for a pre-determined amount of time from the borrowing institution. Due dates are on you’re My Loan account and printed on the label on the front of your items.
All ILL items can be viewed on your My Inter-Library Loan Account.
If you wish to renew your ILL/My Loan item and are having problems doing so, contact Ann Ackerson X7597.
Reciprocal Borrowing Privileges
Colgate has reciprocal borrowing privileges with the following schools: Hamilton College, Herkimer Community College, Lemoyne College, Morrisville College, and SUNY Utica. You must present your Colgate ID at these institutions, follow their procedures for becoming a visiting borrower, and you will be able to borrow items free of charge directly from these libraries.
Reserve Readings are items kept on a specific reserve shelf area behind the Circulation desk on Level 3 and in Cooley Library behind the Circulation desk. They have been placed on reserve by a faculty member for students to use in their course(s).
Types of reserve readingsGeneral item retrieval
Case Reserves, Connect NY, Interlibrary Loan, Case Holds, and Recalls, and LASR requested items can be picked up at the Level 3 Borrowing Services Circulation desk.
Cooley Reserves and holds or recalls placed at Cooley Library can be picked up at the Circulation Desk at Cooley Library in McGregory Hall.
Pick up of reserves
Bring pertinent information (Library of Congress call number) about a reserve book, reserve video or DVD to the circulation desk where a student or staff person will retrieve the item(s) from behind the Circulation desk for you.
Book drops are located at each of the Level 3 and Level 5 vestibule entrance doors to Case Library as well as the one located left of the Circulation desk of Borrowing Services on Level 3. Cooley Library has a book drop open when the library is closed for returns after hours. Items may be dropped in the book drop, returned in the Circulation desk book drop, or handed to a Circulation staff member or student assistant at the Level 3 Circulation desk, Level 5 Learning Commons desk, or Cooley Library.
Time sensitive materials such as reserves, 24 hour periodicals, etc. should be returned to the Circulation Desk where the items were checked out.
All items are subject to recall from all patrons after a patron has had it out for a minimum of 2 weeks. (Exceptions are immediate recalls that are made for items being placed on reserve.)
You can place a hold on any item currently checked out. The borrower will be asked to return the item sooner than their original due date and within 7 days of the recall. You will be notified when it is ready for you to pick up (The Colgate Libraries also suggest Connect NY or ILL if a book is checked out to another patron.)
Items recalled from you must be returned by the new due date or they are subject to daily fines.
When placing a hold, go to the Case or Cooley Library Circulation Desks. You may ask a Circulation staff member or student assistant for assistance with placing a recall or hold on a book, or item that is currently checked out to another patron. You will need relevant information about the book or item in question such as the title, author or call number, in order to place the recall or hold. You must also present your valid Colgate ID to place the recall or hold.
Patrons should come to the Circulation desk first so that staff can assist you in checking the status of an item. If the item is not located in the Circulation area, then there are Locate forms for you to fill out. A staff member will then look for the item and contact you after the item is searched for.
You may check items out using your Colgate ID, return items, or ask for directions to specific areas in the Library. The student assistants are from the Reference department, for any reference questions or assistance; and ITS to help you with technical questions or assistance on Level 5.
Save Shelves are areas on the west side of Levels 2 and 4 in Case Library by the spiral staircases where you may leave unchecked out books for 24 hours. These books will not be re-shelved in the stacks. Books are subject to being pulled or re-shelved after the 24 hour time period or if an item is found and needed by another patron it is subject to being pulled.
