Senior Thesis Carrels are assigned study desks for students wishing to have their own space to collect materials in the library and study. Senior Theses carrels are located on Level 2 in Case Library and Geyer Center for Information Technology. Each theses carrel is equipped with a desk, shelf, locker for personal belongings, electrical outlet and network port.
Application is made by completing the Thesis Carrel Application available at the Case-Geyer Circulation Desk. Thesis Carrel application for seniors working on an honors thesis begins the first Monday of the fall/spring term and continues for 2 weeks. A Banner printout of courses in which the applicant is registered serves as verification of registration for an honors thesis.
Other seniors writing a general thesis may apply 2 weeks following the first day of classes. Any remaining carrels will be available to other students 4 weeks after the first day of classes.
Carrels are assigned in order of application. Keys may be checked out at the Circulation Desk in Case-Geyer to the students to whom carrels have been assigned . Keys are issued only to seniors showing a valid Colgate ID (Gate Card).
Library materials must be checked out at the circulation desk before being stored in lockable carrel cabinets. Books not checked out are subject to removal. Books left on carrels overnight will be collected in the morning pickup and reshelved.
Library-use-only materials such as periodicals, reserves, and reference books may not be stored in carrel cabinets. Library staff periodically examine the contents of carrel cabinets and will remove and reshelve periodicals, reserves, and reference books.
When a thesis is completed, the carrel holder is responsible for returning all books and clearing away any papers and personal belongings. Library staff will remove from carrels materials remaining after the end-of-semester due date. Personal property, including books and papers, will be kept at Borrowing Services Lost and Found for 60 days after which it will be forwarded to Campus Safety.
Valuables should not be left unattended and unsecured. Carrel users may store valuables in the lockable carrel cabinet. Notebook computers and other electronic devices are particularly attractive to thieves and should not be left in carrel cabinets for extended periods. The library is not responsible for loss or theft of items.
Food is not allowed in the library on levels 1-4. Any food left in a carrel will be removed and disposed of. Continued infractions of food may mean loss of carrel privileges. Covered drink cups are allowed.
Unauthorized locks will be removed and contents transferred to lost and found or to the stacks. Keys not returned after 4 weeks will be charged a key replacement fee of $50.00. Keys returned after the due date will also be assessed late fees of $.30 per day prior to the billing/replacement & processing fee.
At the discretion of the library a carrel may be reassigned if the currently assigned person uses the carrel in violation of library or university policy.
