Learning Commons Librarian
Title: Learning Commons Librarian, Reference & Instruction Department
Reports to: Chair, Reference & Instruction Department
Position Summary: On behalf of the Libraries and in collaboration with ITS, lead in the planning, management, and coordination of library staff and services for the Learning Commons to ensure the highest quality service. Educate students, faculty, and staff in the effective and appropriate use of research and multimedia creation tools. Promote the use of the Learning Commons by students, faculty, and staff. Participate in the information literacy program and provide reference service. Serve as liaison to selected academic departments.
Responsibilities:
- Conceptualize, implement, manage, and assess library services supporting students, faculty, and staff in the Learning Commons.
- Serve as the Libraries’ liaison to the ITS Academic Technologies group involving the development of integrated support of research and technology for students, faculty, and staff.
- Guide the formulation, implementation, and interpretation of policies and procedures for the Learning Commons.
- Engage in continual assessment of evolving user needs in Learning Commons and adapt services, facilities and staffing appropriately.
- Work with library faculty, the Circulation Supervisor, and the ITS Academic Technologies Group, to develop and implement student and staff training programs that address the needs of patrons in the Learning Commons.
- Oversee hiring and training and evaluation of student and other staff in tandem with the Reference Librarian.
- Serve on the Libraries/ITS cross-functional committees, such as the Committee on Enhanced Learning.
- In collaboration with the Chair of Reference & Instruction, promote the Learning Commons to students, faculty, and staff.
- Maintain awareness of trends, new developments, and best practices in creating online and web-based information.
- In collaboration with the Information Literacy Librarian, design and teach workshops and classes that develop information competencies in students.
- Participate in systematic assessment that supports information literacy learning outcomes.
- Develop instructional materials in print and electronic formats.
- Provide reference assistance to students, faculty and other patrons during scheduled hours and individual consultations. Scheduled hours include evening and weekend shifts.
- Contribute to the development, delivery and evaluation of programs and services that meet the information needs of the Colgate community.
In addition to specific jobs responsibilities, all library faculty
- Participate in the faculty liaison program in order to promote and sustain a cooperative and consultative relationship between the Libraries and the academic departments.
- Work cooperatively and in partnership with the Head of Collection Development and faculty in assigned departments to develop the collection.
- Participate in library faculty governance.
- Participate in University governance and/or serve the University in other ways as appropriate.
- Demonstrate an active commitment to the profession through continuing education, service and/or scholarship. Maintain awareness of new developments in areas of primary responsibility.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or as may be necessary.
