Status of Case Library Collections

LASR requests are not available until Monday, July 9th. The new open stacks remain available for browsing and circulation, and Connect-NY is available.  Date:  July 2, 2007.

Thanks to the hard working staff of National Library Relocations and Case Library, we are pleased to announce that most of Case Library's circulating collection is now available for browsing on levels two and four of the new Case Library & Geyer Center for Information Technology.  Many government documents have returned from storage and are now located on level one.

ConnectNY borrowing is back online today.M

Items remaining in the LASR system are now requestable via Colgate's Library Catalog (Mondo), including films, music, software, older journals and periodicals, and some government documents.  Other items will be returning from off-site storage throughout the summer, including older books classified in the Dewey Decimal system (monographs published before 1976 with minimal circulation), Special Collections, and the remainder of our government documents.

A heartfelt thank you to Colgate faculty, staff and students for your patience during the last phase of our building project.

* Materials currently in LASR are circulating books, music, films, government documents, software, etc.

In order to insure the optimal performance of the LASR system during the unload of LC materials May 22 to June 17, we have been advised by our vendor, H.K. Systems, to move up the date of the annual maintenance so that it falls prior to the unload. Therefore, H.K. engineers will be working on LASR Thursday and Friday, May 17 and 18. This will not affect your ability to request items from LASR, but materials will not be delivered to your offices or be available at the Circulation Desk from LASR on those two days. Rather, any items requested after 4:30 pm, Wednesday, May 16 through 5 pm, Friday, May 18 will be delivered to your offices, if you so request, or will be available for pickup from the Case Circulation Desk on Monday, May 21.

Also, the ConnectNY service will not be available starting Noon, Friday, May 18, and ending Monday, June 18. The ConnectNY software balances borrowing with lending and since we cannot loan materials over this time, we also cannot borrow materials. Any materials requested before Noon, May 18. will be available for pickup at the Case Library Circulation Desk when they arrive. Please send all of your subsequent requests for materials through Interlibrary Loan Borrowing.

I am sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. Please feel free to contact Frank Gavett or refer to the Ask a Librarian link with any questions you may have about this. MyLoan and WorldCat will continue to operate normally during this period.

Announcing ARTstor

New to Colgate's ever-growing collection of digital resources is ARTstor, a database that offers visual images for educational use.  Like its sibling, Jstor, ARTstor is a project of the Mellon Foundation:

ARTstor is a non-profit organization created by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. ARTstor has developed a digital library of images (including art, architecture and archeology) and descriptive data. ARTstor also provides software tools to enable active use of the images. The tools support a wide range of uses including analyzing images, saving groups of images online, and creating and delivering presentations both online and offline. This is a resource available only for non-commercial, educational uses.

ARTstor's definition of "art" is encompassing. It includes architecture, painting, photography, prints, drawings, sculpture, decorative arts and design, as well as archeological and anthropological objects.

The database includes digital images of art, architecture and archeology browsable by collection, category, and Image Group.  Descriptive data about each digital image including such information as creator, title, object date, creator birth/death dates. Most data include subject headings allowing searching by topics.

Librarian Rebecca Hewitt and Slide Curator Carol Van Schaack have already held one standing-room-only training session for ARTstor; a second will be offered on Tuesday, August 23rd in the Clark Room at Case Library @JCC.  Please RSVP to rhewitt@mail.colgate.edu
