Locating books through the online catalog

There are two ways to execute a subject search in Colgate's Library's catalog (Mondo). The subject key word search can be the best place to begin your quest for books in Case Library. For a more specific type of subject searching use the Library of Congress terms listed below with an exact subject headings search.  Hot Tip: If you find a great book on your subject, check the bibliography for other books to read.

Locating articles in journals and newspapers

Consult the databases listed below to identify journal articles and other materials on your topic. Be aware that spelling may differ from one index to another. For example works on the Navajo may be indexed as "Navaho", "Navajo" or both ways. Searching on the keyword 'Dine' may also yield some articles on this people. Hot tip: Consult Word Dance (Case Ref. E76.2 .W36 1994) to find out the variant names and spellings for each nation.

Bibliography of Native North Americans  (Silverplatter interface)
This database contains citations from the cumulative eight volume set of the Ethnographic Bibliography of North America as well as additional new citations to books, journal articles, essays, conference papers, and US Government documents.
 
America History & Life (electronic coverage from 1964-   /ABC Clio interface)
The essential index to American history journals.
 
Academic Search Premier
This database provides full text for nearly 4,000 scholarly publications with more than 100 titles going back as far as 1975. It includes 3,100 full text peer-reviewed journals and abstracts and indexing for 7,876 journals.
 
Periodical Contents Index
Coverage extends from the 18th century to 1990 for over 1,265 periodicals in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
 
International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (electronic coverage from 1951- /SilverPlatter)
Subject coverage: economics, political science, social and cultural anthropology, sociology. Another good cross disciplinary database with deep coverage. Decent coverage of anthropology.
 
Anthropological Literature
Subject coverage: Anthropological Literature is a bibliographic index to articles and essays on anthropology and archaeology, including art history, demography, economics, psychology, and religious studies. Updated quarterly.  Covers articles published from the 19th century to the present.
 
Ethnic News Watch (Coverage varies with each title with some back to 1980)
This database provides the full text of articles in newspapers published by various ethnic presses in the United States. It currently includes more than 28 newspapers from the Native North American press with over 10,000 articles. Good for understanding current issues.
 
Syracuse Online (Online: Indexing and full text from 1998) 
Part of Global Newsbank, this database is good for locating recent materials on the Iroquois. For the most recent (this week's) coverage see the print edition located in the newspaper carrel at Case Library. The Oneida : the Oneida Indian Nation news is also located in the newspaper carrel.

FINDING PRIMARY RESOURCES

Conduct a search of the online catalog using any of the subject headings listed in the first section and then limit your search results to year of publication before 1960 (or whatever date you fancy). Also check under headings such as "New York (State) --Census" or [church] -missions. If you find a good secondary book on your subject always check the sources listed in the bibliography.

This is an index to older Congressional reports and documents and a good source of primary information. Documents in the Serial set are located in Case storage and can only be accessed through Special Collections. These documents cannot be photocopied and so require extra time commitment and planning.
